The Other Son

"Well, it's been a while since I've seen this episode, but I'll give it a try...

One thing I remember about this episode is that it was filmed almost entirely outdoors - I mean, REAL outdoors, not on a stage. And the scenery was beautiful! I thought the father could have taken a lesson from Ben; Ben appreciates all his sons, embracing their differences, but this father could not accept that his "other" son, which was rather sad. It took the death of his favorite son, and a lecture from Ben, for him to appreciate his other son." - ellen

"This was one episode where they mentioned Adam. Ben has received a letter from him instructing them how to transport the explosives." - grimesgirl

"Good ep, we get to see Joe about ready to pee his pants when the dynamite rolls down the cliff at him." - bunwhisper

"This is a good ep. I wish the boys had been there a longer but still a good one." - jfclover

"Once again, there are several missed opportunities in this episode.

The father of the son, referred to in this title, has never got over the fact that his wife died giving birth to the boy, and he resents it that the boy lived when his beloved wife died. His older son receives all his love and attention and the younger one feels like the black sheep of the family.

Now this happened to Ben, too, when Elizabeth died after giving birth to Adam, yet Ben never refers to this, nor offers the man any advice on how to cope with the situation, even though he's been through it, too. And there is also a reference to an incident when Hoss and Adam were young and fell out over the training of a horse. I wish this had been explored more, as well, but as it wasn't, I wrote a story about it, myself.

As Pat says, Hoss and Joe weren't in it, enough, although when they did arrive, poor Joe ended up with a box of nitroglycerine between his legs, dangling from a rope, halfway up a cliff; it could have been very nasty for him if that stuff had exploded.

The older son is killed when some of the nitro does explode and the father says some pretty hurtful things to his other son, before he manages to see the good in the boy." - ljlover2001
